This special edition of OAA comes courtesy of a 6 year old little lady on her way to Kids' Night on Broadway.

6 Year Old:  Umm, how come Ariel wears rollerblades in The Little Mermaid?

Broadway Vet:  Sweetie, we've all been asking ourselves that same question.

Oh kids and their curiosity . . .

That 6 year old was going to see Shrek last night.  I wonder what she's asking today

But whatever she's asking, and whatever we're answering, at least KNOB is starting the conversation.

Take a kid to a show.

Amen. It is one of the most rewarding experiences you will ever have at the theatre.

I haven’t seen The Little Mermaid, and I have no impulse stirring in me to do so.
But the speculator in me imagines the purpose of roller blades would be to help create the illusion that the character can move through space with the fluidity (no pun intended, really) that she would have were she really under water.
Wouldn’t that be the proper answer to the child?
They can do amazing things with stagecraft these days, but unless I miss my guess, they can’t create a stage that holds thousands of gallons of water and give actors the ability to stay under water indefinitely, all the while speaking and singing.

I’m not sure that’s a true story as The Little Mermaid doesn’t participate in Kids Night on Broadway. I wish they did though.
