Broadway Eight Ball

Panel Alert: Are There Alternatives to the 8 Performance Week?

Broadway Eight BallI’ve produced four Off-Broadway shows.

Three recouped.

One did not.

Three did less than eight performances a week.

One did not.

Guess which three recouped?

The Off-Broadway market has changed drastically since I first came to the city in the early 90s, when shows like Forever Plaid, Nunsense and more played full eight show a week schedules and ran for years.

There are lots of theories as to why the audience for Off-Broadway has shrunk in the past two decades:  more Off-Broadway non-profits, rising prices . . . and (the one that I’m a big believer in) the mere success and growth of the Broadway market.

Fortunately, there are alternatives to the eight show a week model of Off-Broadway (especially since eight shows a week is an arbitrary number – read this blog from ’07 to see what I’m talking about).

And fortunately for you, The Off Broadway Alliance is sponsoring a free panel this Sunday, February 3rd to talk about them!  General Managers and Producers from shows like Silence, Big Gay Italian Wedding and more will discuss how to create unique schedules that can help your shows survive in the new Off-Broadway.

Doors open at 11:30 for free coffee and bagels, and the panel starts at noon and ends at 1:30 (just in time for you to see an Off-Broadway matinee).

For all the details and to RSVP (a must – because these panels  sell out, especially since they’re free!) click here.

Boy, I wish this panel was around when I was getting started.  Maybe that fourth show would have recouped too.
