Need free space? Apply for our Davenport Theatre Space Grant.

Every theater has dark time.

Even if it’s continuously booked like the Gershwin Theatre where Wicked will be defying gravity for the next several decades for sure . . . even the Gershwin has one night a week that’s free.

And Off Broadway theaters and Off Off Broadway theaters have even more dark time.  A week here.  Five days here.  A couple of weekends here.

As I’ve learned from running the sixty seater upstairs at the Davenport Theatre for the past three years, it’s the nature of the Off Off Broadway booking beast.  When you’re renting the theater for five weeks at a time, or three weekends at a time, there are bound to be some nights where the lights aren’t on and the seats aren’t full.

And that just bums me out.  There is nothing more depressing than a dark theater . . . especially when I know how many Artists are out there dying to get a chance to perform on a stage for someone . . . anyone . . . but may not have the Producer or the funds to do it.  But if they just had that chance . . .

So, since there are times when my theater just sits there, empty . . . we thought we’d figure out a way to give it away to Artists who can’t take the risk of throwing down rent up front.

And with that, I am proud to introduce . . . the Davenport Theatre Space Grant!

You can get all the details here, but in simple terms, if you have a show that you’re looking to get up for a few performances, you can apply to get access to the space with no rent required in advance (yes, there is a ticket split after the show gets up in order to help us pay for the costs of the staff, utilities, cleaning, and all the other boring stuff that I never thought of when I said, “I’m going to have my own theater!”).

Applications are accepted here.

You know what a dark theater symbolizes to me?  Unrealized potential.

And I know all of you have the potential to fill up my space with something amazing.

Apply today.  And I hope to see your show on my stage soon.
