Broadway Producer Pick List: Factory Girls

SYNOPSIS

In 1843, 31-year-old Sarah Bagley leaves her family’s New Hampshire farm to join the country’s first working women in the burgeoning factories in Lowell, Massachusetts. She uses the personal time that working for the mill allows, to write for The Lowell Offering, a company-sponsored literary magazine edited by the woman who quickly becomes her closest friend, Harriet Farley. With a forum for their writing and money in their pockets, the women of Lowell are poised to show the world what factory girls have the power to do. But when the corporation reacts to mounting competitions by reducing free time and wages for the workers, Sarah speaks out against the mill in the pages of the Offering. In her fight for justice, Sarah jeopardizes not only her friendship with Harriet but the very gains that she seeks to protect, raising her fiery voice as a leader of the little-known feminist uprising of the American Industrial Revolution.
