Imagination is a modern-day romantic comedy about a pair of aspiring entertainers, fans of performers like Gene Kelly, Judy Garland and Frank Sinatra, whose courtship starts to resemble the classic movie musicals they share a passion for. Grant Gustin (The Flash) is attached to star. Imagination is totally contemporary in setting, storyline and tone, but pays stylistic homage to the legendary ‘Freed Unit’ musicals produced at MGM in the 1940’s and 50’s (e.g. Singin’ In The Rain, The Bandwagon, etc). Choreographer Michael Rooney (500 Days Of Summer), the son of MGM Musical icon Mickey Rooney, is slated to choreograph.
Dean Ward is a veteran film and television writer, currently writing for the Netflix series Chelsea. His feature film comedy Deported, starring Megan Park, Fortune Feimster and Whitmer Thomas, is scheduled for released in 2017. Ward is also an award-winning documentarian, having produced and directed Let Me In, I Hear Laughter – A Salute To The Friars Club for HBO. His passion for classic film musicals, which inspired Imagination, goes back to his childhood. While attending film school at NYU in the 1990’s, he began a correspondence with his idol Gene Kelly, culminating in a letter he received from Kelly after Kelly viewed his graduate thesis film. Kelly concluded his note with the encouraging salvo “you must keep working.” Ward is also an accomplished tap dancer, having taken master classes from tap legends including Gregory Hines, Savion Glover and Charles “Honi” Coles.
