In May 1939, Hitler’s militaristic policies mean that war isn’t only inevitable, but also imminent. As part of the preparations for this calamity, Dietrich Bonhoeffer receives his call-up papers. To the pacifist theologian, the thought of bearing arms constitutes an affront to the very tenets of his faith. He sidesteps the issue by taking flight to America. However, it’s in the New World that he gains the courage to face his nemesis head-on. He returns to Germany and, as Hitler does indeed plunge the world into war, he becomes a double agent in an effort to vanquish the beast from within.
SCOTT WILKINSON (Music & Lyrics) is an experienced singer and songwriter with multiple recordings in a wide variety of genres. He studied music and composition at Albion College and the Berklee College of Music completing a Masters in Songwriting. Ken Davenport has been instrumental in Scott’s moving into musical theater as a career choice. He would like also like to extend his thanks to all his musical mentors at Albion and Berklee for equipping him for the ambitious project of depicting the life of Dietrich Bonhoeffer.
RICHARD JOHN LEWIS (Book): The second I found out what kind of edifice Scott was planning, I knew I wanted to get in on the ground floor of it. A couple of years later, my enthusiasm for the project hasn’t diminished one bit. Indeed, it can even be said to have increased a hundredfold, a thousandfold. The more time I spend with Dietrich Bonhoeffer, the more I realize what an incredibly caring and astute man he was. Add to this his bravery, and a picture of one of the greatest figures of the twentieth century begins to emerge – a picture I hope Bonhoeffer the Musical will go a long way to convey to as wide an audience as possible.
