Male, 40s African American 's sings “Old Man River”, husband to Queenie, very paternal with a quiet strength. Strong Bass Baritone singing voice
Parthy:
Female, Caucasian, 50s Matriarch of “Cotton Blossom”; working class, not classy. a force to be reckoned with. Character singing voice
Magnolia:
Female, Caucasian, late 20s (character ages from 18 to 48 within the show). Strikingly beautiful, falls for Ravenal, glorious lyric soprano singing voice
Julie Lavern:
Female (Late 20s – 30s) Fair skinned African American or Mixed Race Ethnic, Worldly and glamorous the leading lady of the “Cotton Blossom” Legit Mezzo Soprano voice
Ellie May Chipley:
Female, 30s Caucasian, Character lady, wants to be serious actress. Strong dancer, part of the vaudeville team.
Frank Schultz:
Male, 30s Caucasian, Strong dancer, plays villain on the show boat, but “meek as a lamb”, part of the vaudeville team
Gaylord Ravenal:
Male, 30s Caucasian, Riverboat Gambler, Charming, handsome, as much a true romantic as he is a player. High baritone or lyric tenor, must have a strong legit singing voice
Captain Andy:
Male, Caucasian, 50s, Captain of the “Cotton Blossom”. True old time showman. Warm, fatherly character. Baritone, but not a legit singing voice needed.
