SEEKING: Epic Theatre Ensemble is a ten-year-old OBIE and Coming Up Taller award-winning Off-Broadway company, dedicated to making theatre that inspires dialogue about social, ethical, and political issues. Since 2001, Epic has produced 12 Off-Broadway Premieres reaching over 100,000 audience members (including thousands of non-traditional and college audiences) developed the work of over 60 playwrights; and reached over 30,000 high school students with in-depth arts education programs in 25 schools across NYC and the region.

Since Epic’s founding, the duties generally ascribed to a Managing Director have been shared by three of Epic’s Founders as Co-Executive Directors. Epic has grown into a $1M+ organization and we are now seeking a dedicated Managing Director for the first time. The position’s projected start date is August 29, 2011. The Managing Director will be hired by, and report to, Epic’s Board of Directors, and will work in partnership with the Co-Executive Directors as a member of the Theatre’s executive team. This is a rare opportunity to shape a strategic plan for the long-term fiscal health of a dynamic, growing organization, to build long-term successful systems and processes, and to help the organization envision a sustainable and efficient staff structure.


The Managing Director (MD) is responsible for managerial oversight of day-to-day operations and long-term strategic oversight of a dynamic growing organization. Specific responsibilities include:
➢ Administration: The MD supervises the staff and direct administrative operations, including overseeing all human resource policies and their implementation, overseeing contract negotiations, and working with the Executive Directors to facilitate staff and Board communications.
➢ Board of Directors: The MD serves as the primary staff liaison to the Board, assisting with recruitment, education and development, and working closely with the Executive Committee regarding Epic’s operation.
➢ Company Development: The MD oversees the work of the Development Director in strategizing and implementing all fundraising activities. S/he also works with the Executive Directors to strategize and implement all promotion, marketing, and advocacy efforts of the organization.
➢ Financial Management: The MD works with the Executive Directors and the Board’s Finance committee to generate an annual budget and evaluates the impact of programmatic decisions on other financial and institutional priorities. The MD is responsible for monthly financial reporting and supervises Epic’s accounting systems, including the annual audit.


Epic seeks an ambitious leader and creative thinker, able to work closely and in partnership with the Co-Executive Directors to help envision, build, and secure the company’s next ten years. The chosen candidate will demonstrate strong leadership acumen, and effective organizational and interpersonal skills – including a track record of developing and leading a team, a firm understanding of management processes, excellent budgetary skills, and proactive community-building skills. The ideal candidate will:
• Have a minimum of 3 years experience in a non-profit arts management position with experience in fundraising, Board relations, and marketing. Prior experience in a theatre company is desirable;
• Have strong skills in budgeting and financial management;
• Demonstrate capacity to lead, manage, motivate, and collaborate with staff, artists, and Board;
• Have the ability to successfully develop and implement long-term strategic and annual tactical plans;
• Demonstrate a passion for theatre and social justice, have a clear understanding about the importance of arts education in public schools, and value deep connections between a theatre and its’ constituents.
