Auditions – Fortune and Men’s Eyes
WHO: Fortune and Men's Eyes at The Tank
SEEKING: We are seeking four young men who can credibly play late teens – 18/19. All roles are very demanding.
Fortune and Men’s Eyes is a 1967 play by John Herbert about a young man’s experience in prison, exploring themes of teenage violence, homosexuality, and survival. The title comes from William Shakespeare’s Sonnet 29 which begins with the line “When in disgrace with fortune and men’s eyes” (The play was the catalyst for the creation of The Fortune Society, one of the most respected organizations in the country that focuses on re-entry issues of formerly incarcerated individuals. ) It has been translated into forty languages and produced in over a hundred countries.
REQUIREMENTS: Although we are seeking an ensemble of predominantly African-American and Latino Actors, please submit ALL ethnicities.
SMITTY (At least 18 to play 16 – 17 years old) Good-looking, clean cut. The type of person that almost everyone seems to like on first sight.
ROCKY (18 years old) He seems to be older and harder than his age. Driven by fear and violence, he takes pride in having no soft or gentle feelings. He is vicious, dangerous, and unpredictable.
QUEENIE (At least 18 to play 18 or 19 years old) A strange combination of softness and hulking strength. Moves with definitive grace, almost feminine. Course, tough, and pretty.
MONA (At least 18 to play 17 or 18 years old) Seems to hang suspended between the sexes, neither boy nor woman. Slender, sensitive, and intelligent.
