Wise words from my first press agent.

A wise Press Agent once gave me a great piece of advice when talking about the dissemination of information about your show through the news outlets.  “My goal as a press agent,” he said, “is to get your show off the theater pages.  Anyone can get a story about the arts on an arts page, but you’ll know you’ve seeped into popular consciousness when you can get your show in another area of the paper.”

Well, imagine how happy I was yesterday when the NY Times did a story about Godspell and The People of Godspell . . . and decided to feature them on the freakin’ front page of the entire paper.  I’m talking THE front page.

I can’t tell you how honored I was.   To top it all off, my Dad said he was proud of me.  And, well, it doesn’t get much better than that, coming from the man who helped make me the Producer I am today and will try to be tomorrow.

Back to that wise PA for a moment . . . the truth about stories and articles and such is that you can’t design them for any area of any paper.  As a Producer, you can’t actually even think about that stuff (that’s why you have Press Agents to do it for you).  As a Producer, just like an Author, you just have to work on creating something special and unique that people will want to know more about.  Do that, and you’ll find that people will put your story in all sorts of places for you.
