Happy (Broadway) Independence Day!

Today is July 4th.

It’s a day to celebrate this country’s separation from an old school governmental institution that overtaxed us, overworked us, and stifled our creative spirit.

Broadway, whether it wants to or not, has a tendency to do the same, thanks to its political and economic rigidity.

Now, there is no one for us to rise up against or overthrow.  And it’s not even worth tossing a bunch of Starbucks Chai into NY Harbor.

But it is worth saying to yourself, “just because it’s never been done this way before, doesn’t mean it’s not worth doing.”

Declare your own independence from doing things “because that’s the way they’re done.”  Declare independence from people telling you, “it can’t happen.”

Declare Independence from Impossibility.

Because it can happen.  It might be hard . . . but something tells me that if you ask the folks who affixed their John Hancock to that piece of paper 236 years ago, they’d tell you that it was worth it.

And you may just end up helping yourself and a whole bunch of people after you as well.
