How’d I do with my Tony Predictions?

Something funked up my fortune telling powers this year, because I bombed on my Tony Predictions, scoring only a 69%!  Yikes.  Not even a Satisfactory C on this report card!

Here’s what happened and why I think what happened happened:

1.  BEST MUSICAL

I got 2 out of 4 here, with my Kinky Boots (13 noms – hello!) and Matilda locking up the first two.  And then, from way back last summer comes Bring it On (that’s gonna be some Tony number), and the “maybe we’re not just a Christmas show,” A Christmas Story.  I’m still shocked that Hardbody didn’t win out here, given it opened so close to the noms, and that it was critically well received (it was eligible, by the by).  It did grab a few noms, so maybe the committee thought it would be better to recognize the pieces instead of the whole, because of its abbreviated run.

2.  BEST REVIVAL OF A MUSICAL

Bada bing!  4 for 4 on this one.  Admittedly, this category had a low degree of difficulty, but I’ll take it.  Not much to say here, except I still wonder what would have happened had Cinderella been eligible as a New Musical.

3.  BEST PLAY

I got 3 out of 4 in the Play category, missing only Testament of Mary and choosing The Nance instead.  Did the Nominators not want to give too much love to industry-adored Douglas Carter Beane (Cinderella)?  Was the Mary nod to keep the nominators from throwing kudos to Fiona?  I wish I could have been in the room for this one, because I bet it was super tight.

4.  BEST REVIVAL OF A PLAY

Well, well, well.  I batted .500 in this category.  Obviously Macbeth got passed over, which I understand (Alan getting passed over, however, I don’t understand, and I never will).  I also went out on a limb with The Heiress . . . but staying true to form, the Nominators went with the more recent shows picking the much-in-the-press (which couldn’t have hurt), Orphans, and The Trip to Bountiful.
