I wanna join the Broadway Club.
The crowdfunding event I spoke at last week was held at the infamous Players Club in Gramercy Park. If you’re not familiar with The Players, it’s a schmancy members-only org founded by actor Edwin Booth (whose younger brother was . . . well . . . let’s just say his younger brother plays a big role in Stephen Sondheim’s Assassins.) Edwin’s mission statement of the club was to create a place where actors could mingle with the business world. In other words, people with a common interest, but different vocations gathered in one place . . . and cool stuff happened.
Since I picked up golf a year ago, I’ve had the pleasure of playing at a ton of private clubs across the tri-state (thanks to the courtesy of many of my investors). And wouldn’t you know it, the same thing happens there. People with a common interest gather together . . . have fun . . . and cool stuff happens.
Clubs are cool. And in this day of non-stop online interaction, it’s almost more important to gather together offline, because . . . one minute of offline communication is the equivalent of one hour of online communication.
So I couldn’t help but imagine what it would be like if there was some kind of Broadway club . . . maybe not so exclusive . . . maybe just for the fans? Or more things like this? Maybe you could start a Broadway club in your hometown that’s like a book club? See a show a month, and then go to a bar to talk about it and drink about it.
We’ve got an uphill attendance battle to fight in the next decade. And before we enter the fray, we have to gather our armies together, get them passionate . . . and then fight . . . together.
And you can’t do that online.
