Yesterday’s post got me thinking . . .

Broadway Red SoxWhenever I talk about flops on the blog, like I did yesterday, I of course start thinking about my own fear of failure.

Yes, it’s true.  I’m afraid of failing.  Aren’t you?  Of course you are.  Everyone is.  And if someone tells you they aren’t, they’re lying.  Or they’re a robot.

Fear of failure is human.  And you shouldn’t try to eradicate it.  If some self-help guru tries to tell you that you must eliminate any thought of failure from your brain if you’re going to succeed, tell them to flop-off.

You don’t pretend something isn’t there.  You accept it.  Embrace it.

Because at some point in your professional life (and your personal life, actually), you’re going to fail.

Allow me to use a baseball analogy (if only so I can get a na-na-na-na-boo-boo to all you Yankees fans  out there because my Red Sox are in the World Series) . . . Even the best hitters in baseball strike out.  In fact, the real power hitters – the ones swinging for the fences, and the big time success – well, they strike out more than the others.  But they are going for it.

To put it more simply, I don’t care what you are doing . . . producing, writing, acting, trading stocks, or running restaurants or flipping apartments . . .

If you don’t fail, you’re not trying hard enough.
