End of Q2 Results for Broadway’s 2013-14 Season

Rocky IV BroadwayAnd just like that, bam!  Our 2013-14 Broadway season is half over.

Back in September, things were looking like the weather the past couple of days . . . not so hot.  But we’re coming back like Rocky when he fought that Russian Dude in Rocky IV.

Here’s how things look at our midterms:

GROSSES

  • So far this season, we’ve grossed $589,000,963.
  • Last season at the end of Q2 we were at $554,143,913
  • That’s an increase of 6.3% for the Broadway season so far.

ATTENDANCE

  • 5,687,756 people have seen Broadway shows so far this season.
  • 5,748,062 people had seen Broadway shows at this point last year.
  • That’s a 1% decrease from our last Broadway season.
PLAYING WEEKS
  • There were 685 playing weeks after the second quarter this year.
  • There were 720 playing weeks after the second quarter last year.
  • That’s a decrease of 4.9% from last season.

There’s hope for this season yet!  We picked up some serious ground, moving over 6 percentage points to the good in overall gross from last quarter (we were flat lined at the end of Q1), and over 7% in attendance (we were down 1% 13 weeks ago).

Why the change?  Well, we also picked up about 10% in playing weeks.  So, the simple formula to improving gross and attendance?  More shows.  (Of course, while that’s true, it doesn’t mean more recouping shows . . . and might even mean less.)

Q3 is our gold rush time, thanks to the holiday that are upon us, so I’d expect us to be in positive territory in two out of the three categories (except for playing weeks) when it comes time for the next quarter’s report (in just 13 short weeks).

Until then, I’m taking bets . . . where do you think we’ll end up?
