POSITION: Director of Human Resources

DESCRIPTION: Manhattan Theatre Club (MTC), a Tony Award-winning nonprofit theatre dedicated to the production of contemporary plays and musicals, seeks a full time Director of Human Resources. For over forty years, MTC has been the creative and artistic home for America’s most gifted theatrical artists, producing works of the highest quality by contemporary American and international playwrights. MTC produces eight plays annually in Broadway’s restored Samuel J. Friedman Theatre on West 47th Street and off Broadway at the historic NY City Center complex on West 55th Street.

The Director of Human Resources oversees all HR activity for an organization producing six to seven plays per year on Broadway and in off-Broadway spaces, with a full time staff of 55 and up to 600 seasonal, support and production-related employees per year. The director manages all full time staff recruitment, hiring, and employee relations. As a member of the senior management team, the director advises department heads on employee actions, counsels and advises the General Manager and Executive Producer on matters related to employment law, benefits, and employee relations. The director evaluates, selects, and administers all employee benefit programs and works to ensure compliance with all state and federal laws, including FLSA, FMLA, EEO, ERISA, ADA and New York State and New York City Labor Laws.

Additionally, the Director of Human Resources:
* participates actively in the collective bargaining process, including preparation and negotiation sessions for multiple unions; maintains proficiency with all agreements and assists in their interpretation and application
* along with the Director of Finance, supervises the joint Business/HR Associate, Assistant and Intern
* supervises employee actions and separations
* administers all benefits, including health, dental, flex, retirement, life and long term disability plans and COBRA
* case manages all workers compensation claims
* processes staff payroll and supervises the payroll process from start to finish for all production areas; approves all payroll
The director will work on employee education, staff recruitment and retention strategies and will be the conduit for employee disputes and complaints. The director will also ensure compliance with all MTC HR and administrative polices and will partner with the General Manager to ensure a safe and productive work environment for all employees.
The Director of Human Resources has direct interaction with all senior members of the management team, including the General Manager, the Executive Producer and Department Heads.

Requirements: Bachelors Degree with five years progressive human resources generalist experience required. Ten years of professional experience required, preferably in a similar large performing arts organization. The ideal candidate will have PHR or SPHR certification and/or a proven track record of progressive responsibility in HR. The ability to employ flexibility and creativity in the execution of your duties is required. Payroll management expertise required; ADP PayXpert/Workforce Now familiarity and/or certification is strongly desired. Excellent oral and written communication skills are critical.
This is a full time, salaried position with excellent benefits.
