POSITION: Managing Director

DESCRIPTION: Bristol Riverside Theatre is accepting resumes for the position of Managing Director. Bristol Riverside Theatre is a 300-seat not-for-profit theatre with a $2.2 million annual budget. Located just outside of Philadelphia, BRT has received 68 Barrymore Award nominations and 9 Broadway World Awards and has a growing subscriber base. Annual programs include: five mainstage productions, a presented series of shows on tour, four readings of plays in development, four annual musicales, and a free summer program for local youth.  BRT strives to be a dominant force in strengthening the quality of life for area residents. We are firmly rooted in our community and derive our strength from it. We seek to enliven the spirit and consciousness of our audiences through the new and unexpected or the old and rediscovered.

POSITION SUMMARY
The Managing Director has overall responsibility for financial planning, budgeting, fundraising, marketing, accounting, human resources, community relations, strategic planning and board relations. The MD works as part of a highly collaborative three-member team that includes the Founding and Artistic Directors. The MD is responsible for the growth and financial sustainability of BRT. The MD must embrace an integrated and innovative artistic and business focus. Bristol Riverside Theatre has undergone tremendous growth in the past five years, of which we are quite proud. The new Managing Director will both manage this growth and build upon it implementing a new capitalization strategy currently in development.  The Managing Director will have an opportunity to participate in building the strategy and ultimately be responsible for its execution.

The Managing Director will lead and inspire, displaying an entrepreneurial spirit and strategic thinking with the capacity to see the big picture while also attending to details.  The Managing Director will be a team player who will galvanize colleagues around the institution’s mission, vision, and goals. The successful candidate will be a skilled manager who can lead an innovative artistic collaboration. A hands-on manager who enjoys a drive towards accomplishing impactful goals, the selected individual will have a proven track record and possess exceptional organizational, fundraising, management and communication skills. A visionary engagement of external stakeholders and a desire to work in close contact with internal stakeholders is needed.
The selected candidate should also demonstrate the following competencies:
·         Ability to talk shop at the highest artistic levels. The right MD for BRT is able to respond to artistic work, and understand how business decisions affect art-making.
·         Master fundraiser – Demonstrated ability identifying, cultivating, and stewarding major gifts from individuals, foundations, and corporations.
·         Audience Development – Deep understanding of audience development, subscription strategies, and social media that go far beyond the basics.
·         Leadership/Interpersonal Skills – Takes interest in, shows loyalty for, and has positive expectations of others. Delegates responsibilities and involves others in decision-making.
 
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
In keeping with leadership of a dynamic, well respected, community focused contemporary theatre, responsibilities include:
·         Management and Operations
o   Steward the organization’s human, financial, and technological resources.
o   Oversee and build on the current strategic plan which focuses on capitalization and the building of reserves.
o   Create long term plans with the Executive Staff and Board
o   Create an environment of excellence at every level.
o   Identify strategies, and craft messages to maximize earned revenue opportunities.
·         Fundraising
o   Provide leadership for fundraising activities of the Board
o   Provide leadership, direction, mentorship, and oversight to build a fundraising strategy and plan along with development staff.
o   Identify appropriate funding opportunities.
o   Edit and guide grant writing, individual, and corporate appeals
·         Marketing
o   Serve as the chief spokesperson for the organization.
o   Provide direction and oversight to the press agent for organizational messaging
o   Provide direction and oversight to the marketing staff for all aspects of subscription, single ticket, and group ticket sales
o   Take a leadership role in continuing the five year increase in subscribers.
·         Governance
o   Provide guidance that best utilizes the talents and resources of the Board.
o   Stimulate involvement of trustees
o   Work closely with the Board to ensure fiscal health and effective policy setting, community ambassadorship, and general governance of the organization.
o   Assist the nominating committee in prospect identification and cultivation.
o   Orient, educate, and engage trustees to maximize their effectiveness.
·         Financial Management
o   Oversee the implementation of the Capitalization strategy
o   Oversee the fiscal soundness of the organization, including preparing, reporting, and monitoring annual operating budgets with a view toward long-term stability.
o   Monitor and authorize expenditures; with the bookkeeper prepare updated monthly projections, monthly financial statements and weekly cash flow projections for Finance Committee.
o   Negotiate contracts with artists, unions, and vendors.
·         Administration
o   Maintain the appropriate infrastructure to support artists, board, staff, and volunteers that allows them to do their best work
o   Oversee administration to ensure organization is effectively staffed.
o   Recruit high caliber staff, provide leadership and motivation, and ensure that staff has the support and information they need to make sound decisions
o   Evaluate staff performance annually or as needed.
QUALIFICATIONS
The successful candidate will have a minimum 7-10 years of senior management experience, particularly in maximizing revenue and mobilizing human and financial resources. Qualified applicants will have an advanced degree in Arts or Theatre Management or equivalent experience in the performing arts. Competency and comfort with all standard computer applications and equipment is mandatory.
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
Competitive compensation package for a theatre with a $2.2 million budget commensurate with experience, including health, dental, vacation, holiday, and sick pay.
