What, when and how to contract for Off Broadway Shows: A Panel

Ewww.  Contracts.

They are a necessary part of business life, but they’re not fun to negotiate, and they are not fun to prepare.  We all got into theater because we love the theater, not because we love paperwork, right?

And that’s exactly why contracts are even more important . . .to take the emotion out of what we all do, and to make sure there is a structure for the relationship between Producer and General Manager, Director, Actor, etc.

They may not be fun, but they are essential.

And it’s essential you do them right, or you’ll be facing some serious “not-fun” in the future if something goes wrong (side note – if you’re not experienced with contracting, don’t do it yourself, hire a General Manager, Attorney or Consultant to help you – saving a few dollars now may cost you 10x that later).

This Sunday, March 30th, the Off Broadway Alliance is sponsoring a panel discussion about contracts in the Off Broadway arena featuring Off Broadway General Manager, Adam Hess, Attorney and head of the Alliance, Peter Breger, and Broadway and Off Broadway Producer David Elliot.

This is a real nuts/bolts panel that will include some invaluable advice for those of you getting your shows off the ground.  I love panels that talk about the future of our business, and new-fangled, untested marketing techniques . . . but nothing is better than a panel with practical advice that you can use today, that can save you time and money tomorrow.

The Panel will be held on the 4th Floor of the Snapple Theater Center, 210 West 50th St this Sunday, March 30th.  Doors open for donuts and schmoozing at 11:30 with the panel starting at High Noon.  It’ll last until 1:30 with networking time (!) after.

As with all Off Broadway Alliance panels, it’s absolutely free (including the donuts and coffee), but you have to RSVP.  Click here to let them you know you’re coming, or forever hold your peace.

Enjoy it, and then go forth and contract.
