The Sunday Giveaway: Two Tickets to The Awesome 80s Prom!
Last fall, I announced on this blog that after almost a decade of breakdancing, The Awesome 80s Prom was closing, thanks to our landlord yanking our lease out from under us.
And this spring, we found a new and improved home at 42West, so we’re bringing it back for four shows only!
So we’re also giving away a pair of awesome tickets.
If you haven’t seen the show in the last decade, well, where the #$%@ have you been?!? Uh, I mean, if you haven’t seen the show in the last decade, then this is your chance!
To find our winner, we’re going to play a simple game I played with the group of improv actors that helped create the show (I used the same technique for Prom that I used for Gettin’ The Band Back Together and that I’m using for a brand new project that is in rehearsals right now).
It’s simple.
Comment below with the name of your favorite 80s movie. Extra credit for giving me the name of a song or two from the musical version, should that ever come to be.
For example, mine would be Better Off Dead. Some song titles? “I Want My Two Dollars!” and “Can You Ski The K12?”
Go and gooooood luck! And I’ll see one of you at The Prom!

RAIN MAN

The Glory of Love
War Games
(“Let’s Play Global Thermonuclear War”)
or
Mommie, Dearest
(“Because I Am Not One of Your Fans”)
Dirty Dancing, Hungry Eyes
The Princess Bride – “As You Will”
I like “Raiders of the Lost Ark” — “Indiana Jones Theme”
It should be “As You Wish”, also “Inconceivable” and “The Ballad of the Five Fingered Man”
The Breakfast Club: “Are We Our Parents?”
MOONSTRUCK
“Snap Out Of It”
An American Werewolf in London, “Another One Bites the Dust”
The Breakfast Club. I can think of several song titles:
“Is She a Virgin?”
“Hoarder”
“Don’t You (Forget About Me)” In Acapella and In a Reprise form
Just as a starting list.
Coal Miner’s Daughter which came out in March of 1080. Love the movie telling Loretta Lynn’s story. Of course, it had lots of songs in it. I like the title song, “Coal Miner’s Daughter”. Also Bill Monroe’s song “Blue Moon of Kentucky”, which was sung by Levon Helm of The Band fame. Levon passed away last year, unfortunately.
The Breakfast Club. “Where was that lipstick?” “Air Force Ranger.”
Say Anything
Songs:
Say Anything – the love ballad
Buy, Sell or Process – the I (don’t) want song
Kickboxing – chorus: it’s the sport of the future
Joe Lies – the breakout song that you can’t leave the theater without humming. Also the tag line on T-shirts and other merch.
Adventures in Babysitting. I would definitely stick with “Babysitting Blues” and throw in the original song “Ya Think?” sung by Daryl.
More songs for your Better Off Dead list:
Is This Pure Snow?
The Octopus – chorus: The important differences in tentacles and testicles
The Ballad of the Pig Nosed Fry Cook
Suicide is Painless (but completely reimagined and upbeat)
Steel Magnolias The Musical
Featuring:
“In Shades of blush and bashful”
“Good Morning, Ouiser”
“But My Daughter Can’t”
Against All Odds, Take a Look At Me Now
“The Breakfast Club”- Don’t You Forget About Me
Running on Empty. Title song, Go out there and make a difference, Our Birthdays are Bizarre
Back To The Future: songs include “This is Heavy” and “88 Miles Per Hour”
I also said “88 Miles Per Hour” before reading yours, lol
Here’s another:
Ferris Bueller’s Day Off
Featuring:
“Let My Cameron Go”
“Rooney Rumba”
“He’s Going To Marry Me”

Songs:

“X” never, ever marks the spot
lost in his own museum
Charlemagne. Lyrics: Let my armies be the rocks and the trees and the birds in the sky…
My favorite ’80’s movie was “Tootsie”.
Some songs from a proposed musical version:

Crocodile Dundee – That’s Not a Knife
Heathers – Popular, Ich Luge
Back to The Future
“88 Miles per Hour”
“Kissing Calvin Klein”
“Where we’re going, we don’t need roads”
I had forgotten how many 80s movies have been harvested for the musical theater. This was a nice refresher.
Tossing caution to the wind, because maybe exceptional movies rarely make outstanding stage musicals, I must go with “Tootsie.”
Songs:
“(My Life Is a) Dress Rehearsal”
“Hit Your Mark”
“We’re Live”
Top Gun – “Danger Zone”
Caddyshack – “I’m Alright”
Risky Business – “Good Old Rock and Roll”
Purple Rain – “Jungle Love” (o-e-o-e-o)
