The Sunday Giveaway: Two tickets to Charlie Chaplin’s Modern Times at the NY Philharmonic!
Here’s one of the more unique theatrical giveaways we’ve ever had here on a Sunday! And I gotta say, I wanna win!
My father introduced me to the classic Charlie Chaplin film Modern Times back in my pre-teen days, and I remember being blown away by the comedy, but also the social statement that the movie was making simultaneously. I’ll admit my father had to explain it to me . . . but it didn’t take me too long to get it.
That was the genius of Chaplin (and why there was a musical about him) . . . he was the ultimate artist because he could make films like Modern Times and The Great Dictator which could be enjoyed only on their surface, or you could peel back the gags and pratfalls and find levels and levels of the deepest depths.
And that, my friends, should be the mission of all of us who create and produce theater and art. Entertain first, educate without anyone even knowing.
This giveaway is a chance for you to see this classic film at the beautiful Avery Fisher Hall on September 19th.
But wait, there’s more!
The NY Philharmonic Orchestra is going to play the score the film . . . LIVE . . . while you watch! No scratchy, monotone soundtrack this time . . . you’re going to hear this score played by the best musicians in the world (Take that London Phil!). For more info on the perf, click here.
Fun, right?
(I think this might the coolest date idea ever, by the way – you’d look smart and artsy and it’s still dinner and a “movie” so for all you single folks, invite your next “Tinder” date to this sucker.)
So how do you ‘score’ these tix?
What movie musical would you like to watch on film, with the NY Phil playing along? For me, it’s West Side, hands down.
What about you? Comment your answer below and one of you will win! Good luck!

Meet Me in St. Louis!
Anchors Aweigh! (Gene Kelly + Jerry Mouse + NY Phil = Perfection)
West Side Story, of course. But also My Fair Lady or Ben Hur!
On The Town!
I would love to watch the original, untouched, unchanged, “Star Wars” film from 1977. That iconic John Williams score, there’s so much glorious music throughout, and the original version before Lucas started toying around with it is perfect and represent a turning point in cinema as well as the world.
Oliver
Fantasia!
On the Town
West Side Story, of course, hands down, but also My Fair Lady, Singin’ in the Rain, Sweeney Todd!
Definitely Singing in the Rain 🙂
Classic.
So fun! I’d love to see My Fair Lady … Although getting to see Mary Poppins would be a treat, too.
Sweeney Todd with a live orchestra… yes… yes… oh, please yes….
Ghandi. Fitting send-off for Richard Attenborough…
Oliver! for sure
The Artist, winner of Oscar for Best Picture in 2011
Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street
I’m with you on West Side Story. But also August Rush!
Singing in the Rain for sure!
“An American in Paris” would be fabulous!
Definitely, West Side Story
I would pick “An American in Paris”.
“An American in Paris” would be fabulous!!
Sound of Music 🙂
(quite literal, isn’t it?)
Il Postino would be nice, too…
West Side Story – but they DID do this! Back in September 2011, for two nights – and I was there!
http://nyti.ms/VK2kwQ
They had lots of the guys from the movie there, including George Chakiris (Bernardo), Russ Tamblyn (Riff), and Marni Nixon (singing voice of Maria). WHAT an amazing night!!
An American In Paris… oh wait! I’ll see it on Broadway! !
Without a doubt, WIZARD OF OZ – my favorite movie ever! But I’d also love to see the first Harry Potter movie too.
Singing in the rain
Funny Girl. Or Moulin Rouge! might be beautiful!
Singin in the rain
Singin’ in the Rain would be great. I’ve always loved that movie.
Electric Dreams
It would be great to see the Phil play the movie version of “American in Paris.” So many great musical numbers in that.
I saw the NY Philharmonic ‘accompany’ the movie of West Side Story. Beautifully synced. Wonderful experience. I would love to see them do FUNNY GIRL. The overture alone would be brilliant.
South Pacific
I think that’s a beautiful score
I’d love anything by Rodgers and Hammerstein
Fiddler on the Roof
2001: A Space Odyssey
I would say Disney’s Huntchback of Notre Dame!
I would love to see Camelot, the Irish Rep had a fund raiser this year with many of the songs performed with an orchestra, and the overture was so beautiful. It’s gorgeous music.
Singing In The Rain or Funny Girl <3
“Cinema Paradiso” – such a charming movie, full of pathos augmented by an iconic film score by the great Ennio Morricone …. so worthy of our NYPhil!
Saw Koyaanisqatsi with a live orchestra. Amazing.
Man! I was going to go with Oliver. But truly I think my vote would be on Sweeney!
I’d have to go with Moulin Rouge … the film is such an extra-sensory experience, having live music would really envelop you in the world of the piece. Chaplin is my all-time fave filmmaker; interesting that there have been several attempts to musicalize his life, from Anthony Newley thirty years ago to the recent musical. If you ever want a look behind-the-scenes from 90 years ago, check out the documentary Unknown Chaplin, which uses rare outtakes from his films to demonstrate how he created his incredible, lasting work.
Tie between South Pacific and The King and I……….I can’t make up my mind!
Sweeney Todd, Little Shop of Horrors, Hair.
Bye Bye Birdie!
Swing Time
Phantom of the Opera
Jaws by John Williams. It is one of AFI’s top ten scores of all time, has some of the most iconic film sounds ever and frankly, I love hearing orchestras play frightening music.
The Wizard of Oz.
There was a symphonic version this weekend up at Tanglewood that I would have loved to attend but didn’t make it, so I think the NY Philharmonic should take a shot this go round!
Great giveaway ken! Yes the NY PHIL did play the soundtrack to West Side a little while back. It was glorious.
I’d like to hear ‘The Hours.’ Phillip Glass all the way!
I’d love to see and hear the Lost Horizon —
AN AMERICAN IN PARIS
THE RED SHOES
West Side Story
The Red Violin
Movies it would be Lawrence of Arabia, Dr. Zhivago, and Gone With The Wind. Filmed Broadway Shows would be: On The Town, Gypsy,Paint your Wagon
E.T. The Extra Terrestrial
The Music Man
I have three in mind–An American in Paris, My Fair Lady, and South Pacific.
yankee doodle dandy
c’mon ken, show some spirit!!
Les Miserables. (Not sure anyone suggested that one, yet!! 🙂 Lots of good ones suggested!
All That Jazz
“The Umbrellas of Cherbourg” Gorgeous music and a visually stunning film.
I had the very good fortune years ago to see the silent film Napoleon accompanied by a live symphony orchestra. It was magnificent. I’d like to see the romantic Brigadoon with a live symphony but that is unlikely as it only comes along every century or so. Ah well, will have to wait a while.
Walter
Jesus Christ Superstar.
Annie Get Your Gun!
Singin in the Rain or Mary Poppins
WSS is solid, of course.
For me, without a doubt, CHESS.
Oh how I wish I was in attendance for the London concert version.
Can’t Stop The Music
The Good, The Bad and the Ugly
Lieutenant Kije
I’d say either a Bernard Herrmann score (say, Psycho?) or an Andre Previn score… like my favorite less-known Dead Ringer starring Bette Davis as twin sisters!
Singing in the rain!!!!
I’d like to see and hear a live orchestra perform Disney’s ” Fantasia “.
Carousel…..just the opening of the movie would be worth a treat.
“Pennies From Heaven” (1981). Not a total success, but as with “Hair” there are ravishing moments, emotional highs. Worth a big-scale revisit.
Hello, Dolly
Apocalypse Now – if only for “The Cry of the Valkeries” and then Star Wars (The original first film)
All the ones everyone mentioned but also for me “Oklahoma!” Oh What a Beautiful Score!
There are so many movie musicals to choose from, which is why this is a great, great art form that brings so much joy to people.
A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Guys and Dolls, Dancer in the Dark, Top Hat, Hello Dolly
The Snowman (the film based on the children’s story), Tarsem’s The Fall, Joffe’s The Mission, Chaplin’s The Kid
Additional votes for Sweeney Todd, Singin’ in the Rain, and West Side Story
So many great suggestions. After the gorgeous Lincoln Center revival, I’d love to see South Pacific.
Singing in the Rain!
South Pacific!
For me, It has to be An American In Paris! Just the style of music along with scenery and choreography from the movie would be just delightful to see.
Musica Man!
ones I haven’t seen mentioned:
Doctor Zhivago
Superman – the original with Christopher Reeve, music by John Williams
Lawrence of Arabia
Hugo – I saw it in 3-d and the way Martin Scorsese used the 3-d was amazing and could be a training class for other directors. To add live music to the 3-d experience would be something really special.
Gigi
ones already mentioned and wonderful:
West Side Story
South Pacific
I’m a sucker for silent movies with live orchestras. Metropolis is fantastic with all the epic proletariat visuals. The workers going up the stairs and the shots of “the city”. Also though, The General. All those stunts that Buster Keaton and the train score. Also though, one of my favorite scores of all time is Once Upon a Time in the West. The music when the audience finds out Frank killed Harmonica’s family. It gives me chills. Hearing it live would be epic.
“Singin’ in the Rain” would be wonderful to hear played by the Philharmonic and “An American in Paris” would be splendid.
An American In Paris! Gotta love me some Gershwin.
This one is way too easy: Disney’s FANTASIA!!!
Woody Allen’s MANHATTAN has a wonderful Gershwin score that would be gorgeous to hear.
West Side Story – besides its most deserving musical score, this would also be a tribute to Leonard Bernstein and the orchestra that he conducted for many years, namely (his/our) NY Philharmonic.
For a musical, WIZARD OF OZ for sentimental reasons. Always makes me think of watching it with my dad as a kid.
BUT… It’s been a dream of mine to see the original KING KONG with a full orchestra. There’s plenty of dialogue in that movie, but boy, once they get to the island, it’s a roller-coaster borderline “silent movie” and a really exciting score that works with the action. I’d LOVE to see that one up and HEAR that score.
I would be thrilled to hear them play anytime anywhere
One of my all time favorite shows movie and on stage has always been South Pacific.
It would be fun to hear them playing to the song Happy Talk
Did I miss the amazing opportunity to win the tickets to the Charlie Chaplin Tramp anniversary 🙁
