The Sunday Giveaway: Two tickets to Rock of Ages on Broadway!
Oh it was about 7 or so years ago now when I got a call from an agent in LA asking me if I’d meet with someone who was working on this “80s Rock Show Thingee” that had sold out a club in LA for six weeks and had everybody wanting more.
See, I was a couple years in on The Awesome 80s Prom at that point, so this agent thought I might want to take a look and get involved.
One 80s show was enough for me at that point, and besides, the show was in great hands with the group of producers that moved it from LA to Off Broadway (with a brief stop in Vegas) then to the Brooks Atkinson on Broadway where it picked up a Tony Nom, and then to the Helen Hayes on Broadway and then to the silver screen with Tom Cruise and Alec Baldwin, and then on multiple tours and all over the world.
Huh, why didn’t I take that meeting again? (If you think that was a missed opp, remind me to tell you about the time I had a shot at getting in early on Once!)
Years later, and Rock of Ages is still rocking on Broadway (and is responsible for grabbing a lot of my audience from The Prom, actually). And they deserve it.
And one of you is going to get the chance to rock out at Rock of Ages because we’ve got two tickets to give away . . . and the timing couldn’t be more perfect, because original Rock star Constantine Maroulis just returned. And you’ve haven’t lived until you’ve heard him scream out some of those 80s tunes, let me tell you something.
So how do you win?
The 80s are awesome. And they’ll never die. I’ve said before that the 80s are the new 50s . . . a decade that will always be fun to celebrate.
But what if Rock of Ages was a 90s show? Give me the name of your favorite 90s tune that could inspire a musical of the same name. You will be disqualified if your song is from any other decade but the 90s. Or if your song is Celine Dion’s, “My Heart Will Go On.”
One winner gets to hear Constantine blow the roof off the Helen Hayes! Good luck!

“What a Girl Wants” by Christina Aguilera. NOT an adaptation of the movie with Amanda Bynes
COME AS YOU ARE
The musical love story based on the synonymous Nirvana song. Featuring Carrie Manolakos as a woman burned by past love (sings Creep, You Oughta Know), who finds love in the most unlikely of places – a California lifeguard named Mitch (sings Crash Into Me, Aerosmith’s Cryin’, Californication).
Believe -Cher
Although his music goes back to the 70’s, the 90’s song I am choosing is “I would do anything for love” from Meat Loaf. I’m dying to see a musical based around his music because it is all so naturally theatrical. Title? “Anything For Love”
Semi-Charmed Life by Third Eye Blind. Since I already helped write the first draft of just such a musical for a college project it seems perfect to me. (disqualify me from the contest since I can’t make it to New York right now).
Bitter Sweet Symphony seems to perfectly sum up the music of the 90s!
Boys II Men, “End of The Road”…. To be honest, I’m itching for the next boyband musical!
VISION OF LOVE….MARIAH CAREY
Smells Like Teen Spirit
“Wonderwall”. Great song, mysterious-sounding as a title, I think it could work!
Back In Black – A comedy with color.
“Opposites Attract” by Paula Abdul, could be a great song for a romantic comedy musical.
Smells like Teen Spirit!
Silent All These Years- Tori Amos
How about a musical about the resurgence of Britpop in the 90s? You could use music by Oasis, Blur, Suede etc? You could also include the music of Duran Duran, using their 90s tune Ordinary World. I would see that musical!
Well, someone already took my Smells Like Teen Spirit, and God knows Spice Girls and Britney musicals have already been done…I’m gonna go with “Lovefool,” a la the Cardigans song. As a title it’s easily applicable to any romantic story!
I’d love to see a musical inspired by Depeche Mode’s “Enjoy the Silence.” I don’t know what it would be about, but it would be a little dark and moody and dramatic. It may not be a commercial hit, but it would at least have a great name.
Bed of Roses
-Bon Jovi
WHAT’S UP? – 4 Non Blondes
That’s The Way Love Goes – Janet Jackson
Streets of Philadelphia by Bruce Springsteen! His music is so evocative!! So many choices of music could be in the production!
Under the Bridge- The Red Hot Chili Peppers (1991)
BeastieBoys- Intergalactic Planatary
A futuristic musical following in the footsteps of “Holla if Ya Hear Me” 🙂
IRIS – The Goo Goo Dolls
It’s Not Right, But It’s Okay by Whitney Houston inspires so many ideas! I see a musical comedy about love triangles! xD
Heart- All I wanna do is make love to you.
I think this song has an outstanding storyline for a musical.
Sheryl Crow’s All I Wanna Do (Is Have Some Fun) – A story is already laid out for you.
Second option of Barenaked Ladies’ One Week.
I’m surprised the classic Hanson’s “Mmmm Bop” was not also banned.
Losing my Religion – R.E.M.
But on another note Ken -I was a huge fan of SMASH even though I know it wasn’t an accurate depiction of the real workings of theater. That said I thought the premise of their production of “Marilyn” or “Bombshell” as it might have been named wasn’t a bad idea. I really enjoyed the musical numbers and listen to the cd all the time. What would be the downside of trying to mount that production for Broadway or even off Broadway?? Just curious…
Madonna’s “RAY OF LIGHT” — lighting pyrotechnics, techno-sounds and fab costumes. A winner!
Blame Canada
The oscar nominated song from the South Park movie released in 1999 #nuffsaid
“Baby Got Back” by Sir Mix-A-Lot. It would be starring Jennifer Lopez, Kim Kardashian & Nikki Minaj!
“Livin’ La Vida Loca” (Ricky Martin). We need another Latino musical. And with a la vida loca title or theme, a playwright could go, well, loco/loca.
Tearin Up My Heart- A musical about NSYNC, BSB and all the boy bands of the 90’s.
Seal singing “A Kiss From a Rose” is exquisite!
You Oughta Know by Alanis. Jagged Little Pill adapted in the same vein of American Idiot.
“Tragic” Kingdom” (No Doubt) It already has a bizarre storyline. Add crazy costumes, a lot of flash and expensive technology – and voila! a show that will run in the Marquis and die before it takes off (like Wonderland).
Help Save The Youth of America From Exploding –Less Than Jake 1998!

Little Miss Can’t Be Wrong…
Prove Yourself by Radiohead
I Will Always Love You by Whitney Houston, and the movie could be adapted for
the stage, unless it was already done. Hey, revival!
So Many great songs! But one of my FAV 90’s tunes is “The Way” by Fastball. A one hit wonder what could inspire a great story! “Anyone can see the road that they walked on was paved in gold..” WHO ARE THEY? I WANT TO FIND OUT!
Alannis Morisette’s-Ironic
C.R.E.A.M. by Wu Tang Clan
“Bed of Roses” by Bon Jovi would make a great story of a performer on the road who is torn between his love of the spotlight and his beloved at home. Or if you want another just plain old rockin’ fun show then use “I’ll Sleep When I’m Dead”.
Here’s one more Bon Jovi for you. “Blame it on the Love of Rock n’ Roll” is the life story of a guy who was born to be a rock star and everything he had to go through growing up and his struggles to get there.
November Rain
Spoonman by Soundgarden or Undone The Sweater Song by Weezer!
Everlong by Foo Fighters. Dave Grohl presents sadness, desperation, and loss. This was very applicable with the death of Kurt Cobain (and Grohl’s wife). There is melancholy there…”if anything will ever be this real forever”. Amazing song.
“Lucky” by Britney Spears.
Come to My Window–a beautiful, searing love story about two secret lovers fighting for their relationship against all odds.
What I really want is a show arranged by the Skivvies in their style of 90s songs but let’s go with under the table and dreaming by Dave Matthews Band.
Barbie Girl by Aqua
“I Want It That Way” by the Backstreet Boys
What’s the Frequency Kenneth-REM
I Want It That Way
West Side Story meets Rock of Ages. The untold story of 90s of how groups like backstreet boys, NSYNC and 98 degrees dominated the 90s pop scene. The musical documents the boys’ back-stories, how they met, their rise to frame and how they competed against one another to top the charts.
THE THONG SONG by Sisqó. A classic! 🙂
You Oughta Know-Jagged Little Pill-Alanis Morisette 1995
Alanis Morrissette, “Ironic”
Foolish Games by Jewel
Wannabe by the spice girls
Good Riddance – Green Day
Save the Best for Last by Vanessa Williams!
There are so many great ones, depends what direction you want to go in.But I Believe “livin la vida loca” would be a good one. Because the plot can be pretty much anything! It leaves lots of room to play. But it could have an “In the Heights” meets “Carmen” feel.
Wallflowers’ One Headlight, a 90s romance, broken but muddling through.
The world I know- Collective Soul. The lyrics are intense and deep.
Smells like teen spirit.
Get the funk out! Extreme
Real World by Matchbox 20. Any of the songs on their album, Yourself or Someone Like You, for that matter.
For sure I don’t want to miss a thing by Aerosmith.
Marky Mark’s GOOD VIBRATIONS. The name alone would make me want to see the show. It sounds fun.
All That She Wants- Ace of Base
Santana, feat. Rob Thomas “Smooth”
Bon Jovi Blaze of Glory
California Love – The story of Tupac!
November Rain G & R
Hey Jealousy – Gin Blossoms
Believe by Cher, hands down!
All Star by Smashmouth released May of 1999. This song reminds me of football games getting all pumped up and ready to cheer on my team!
“Life Is A Highway” Tom Cochrane: I think it would be perfect and you would rock it out!!!! Hope to see you soon!
The song “Linger” by the Cranberries. Would be a good ballad during a lovers quarrel.
“Black or White”, by Michael Jackson. Will sell tickets, and could be the title song of a musical addressing the ongoing situation in our country.
Two Steps Behind – Def Leppard
Jagged Little Pill is an album, not a song, and I think a musical based around the songs is already in development.
But a musical based on the music of the Beastie Boys with the title Sabotage would be goddamn baddass.
No Rain-Blind Melon
Call Me, came out in 1980′ it could be a throwback to 70s disco and the beginning of mainstream punk
Virtual Insanity by Jamiroquai Computers, the Internet, car phones, pagers, cell phones – the 90s was definitely about technology!
Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)
Would be perfect for a broadway show to be built around
Quit Playing Games (With My Heart) by Backstreet Boys
I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing – Aerosmith
“Life Is A Highway” Tom Cochrane: I think it would be perfect and you would rock it out!!! Hope to see you soon! ***email revised! Sorry ’bout that! 🙂
6th avenue heartache by the wallflowers
or
Always by Bon jovi!!!!!!!!! <3
Extreme – More Than Words
Smells like teen spirit by Nirvana!
I nominate River of Dreams by Billy Joel a song about trust with a gospel flair. Incidentally Christie Brinkley drew the album cover which won Album cover of the year in 1993.
I want it that way Backstreet Boys
“Blaze of Glory.”
Ironic
Wannabe- Spice Girls- story of a girls journey to becoming a star in a girls band, from her audition to how her life changes. She’s the ultimate wannabe that must do whatever producers tell her. Does she lose herself?
Uncle Tom’s Cabin – Warrant- who was that they dumped in the wishing well?
Californication, Red Hot Chili Peppers, 1999 text/call 973-981-8248 if I win 🙂 Much thanks for the opportunity!!
