The Sunday Giveaway: Two tickets to Deaf West’s Spring Awakening!

I’m still catching my breath from this one moment in the Deaf West production of Big River that played Broadway a number of years ago.  If you saw the show, then you know exactly the moment I’m talking about.  Yep, yep.  That’s the one.  Whew!

If you’re not familiar with Deaf West, then let me introduce you to one of the coolest theater companies around.  See, they produce full on productions, with a mix of hearing impaired and non-hearing impaired actors . . . and present them in a way that they can be enjoyed by both the deaf and the non deaf.

And they are at it again, and this time they’ve put up a production of Spring Awakening out in LA that is already in its second incarnation (and who knows, maybe it’ll head back this way if the current production at the Wallis Annenberg Center in Beverly Hills does what I think it could).

That’s right, y’all, this giveaway is for all you West Coasters out there, or for any of you that want to jump on a plane to see this sucker (which features original cast member Krysta Rodriguez and is directed by Michael Arden and choreographed by So You Think You Can Dance‘s Spencer Liff.)

Not that they need it, but lets give Deaf West some ideas for their next production. In the comments below, name a show that you think their interpretation could make even more interesting.  I’ll pick a winner this Saturday, and Deaf West will have a slew of shows to choose from for next time.

    The very first show that popped into my mind, was Next to Normal-
    A fabulous, multi-faceted story!

    Big Fish is already visually stunning so adding the ASL would be breathtaking, but a really parred down version of Once could be done well. Peter and the Starcatcher is also letting select professional companies do performances, not to mention West Side Story, simply for being an incredible classic.

    I have seen Deaf West’s productions of Pippin, American Buffalo and Spring Awakening. I don’t think anything can beat Sprinf Awakening but I’d love to see ASL incorporated into a visually stunning show like War Horse.

    I know that exact moment you are talking about in Big River. That being said, I would like to see Sweeny Todd. Or even go really old school and do The Music Man. Or have West Side Story where one of the gangs is deaf.

    ASL is such an expressive language, I think a highly emotional show like the last 5 years would be beautiful.

    The Addams Family Musical! Instead of having the difference between the families being just that the Addams are creepy and kooky, add in the ‘language’ gap and it adds in more tensions than just the families being odd and ‘normal’. If not Addams Family, Rent would be very effective! It would be able to show the stigma of deaf versus hearing.

    How about Starlight Express, with handicapped actors as well as deaf actors? With her vocals and wheels, Ali Stroker would be a great Dinah! Think about it!

    I’m an ASL student and I’ve learned that it’s a very expressive language. I’d like to see an emotional show like Next to Normal be done by Deaf West.

    I also think a show like Chicago would be interesting!

    I think Next to Normal would be amazing, and add important discussions about disability and visibility to a musical that already does a beautiful job of that with mental illness.

    and I also think it would be really interesting to do something that On the Town or Thoroughly Modern Mille would be amazing and really fantastic to watch.

    I think they ought to cast their magic on Into the Woods. The show is about community and the need to stick together — to create bonds between groups and individuals who otherwise would not necessarily even interact. The same holds true with the Deaf/dead and Hearing/hearing communities (duplication intentional).

    This production of “Spring Awakening” was done earlier this year in a smaller venue off of downtown Los Angeles and it was amazing. Deaf West proves they have no theatrical limits. How about “American Idiot,” “Pippin,” “Sweeney Todd,” “Cabaret,” “Mamma Mia,” “Little Shop Of Horrors,” “RENT,” Bare,” or (in tribute to L.A..), “City Of Angels?”

    Those ideas for Last Five Years and Bridges of Madison County were both very good. I think a slapstick would be a fun challenge, if not as poignant. Mel Brooks would probably sponsor their production of The Producers.

    Saw and loved Deaf West productions of BIG RIVER and PIPPIN. Of course, my immediate response was to say TOMMY. I also think Deaf West (with Michael Arden) should consider THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME.

    They probably wouldn’t be able to do this for a while…but I think it would be very cool to see a Deaf West production of Hamilton.

  • “The Light in the Piazza” would be amazing if done by Deaf West. By the way, I saw their production of “Big River” at the Mark Taper Forum years ago, and that “goosebump” moment has stayed with me ever since.

    A few years back at KCACTF, I saw a production of Noises Off using all deaf college actors. I’d really love to see what a group of professionals would do with that situation. It was one of the best productions I’ve ever seen.

    Having been recently awed by Michael Arden’s Quasimodo in “The Hunchback of Notre Dame,” I’d love to see what Deaf West would do with that show.
    He gave his hearing impaired Quasi simple sign language – signs that looked totally natural and that he rarely used to communicate with others but, instead, almost as an after thought – as if Quasimodo was repeating words to himself to communicate with himself. His signing was so natural and simple I wonder how many people watching him actually realized he was using ASL.

    Evita! Because it’s both an amazing musical, inspirational, and motivates women to be more independent- free-daring. Really demonstrate’s a true woman’s strength.

  • Hope they read all these comments, because I would love for them to consider performing my Incredibly Deaf Musical! I mean…how great a fit is that?

    It could really deepen this story of becoming deaf to incorporate more ASL and a larger ensemble…would be fascinating to see what they would do with the show.

  • It would be SO interesting to see a really dance-heavy show. But what about a dance show set to music, a la Movin’ Out? Because technically it’s all lyrics, with dance interpretations creating and linking the pieces of the story. Imagine how that would affect the choreography. Too literal? Perhaps. But interesting regardless.

    Just for a bit of awareness, the non-offending terms are Deaf and Hard of Hearing (HOH). “Impairment” implies that something is wrong or defective and focuses attention on the disability in the negative. Thanks!
