The Sunday Giveaway: Two tickets to Audra McDonald at the Hollywood Bowl!
Something tells me that a lot of you would travel a long way to see Audra McDonald sing.
For you East Coasters, you might have a reason to head out to Hollywood if you win this giveaway. And for you West Coasters, it might actually take you longer to get to the Hollywood Bowl than a flight from NYC to LA thanks to all your crazy traffic.
But either way, you know it’ll be worth it. Because, frankly, when has Audra ever NOT been good? Seriously, the woman has been not just good but amazingly good in every thing she’s done.
And on Tuesday, Sept. 1st and Thursday, Sept. 3, she’s going to raise the roof at the Hollywood Bowl (get it – because they don’t have one?) with her “Broadway and American Songbook” concert featuring tunes from West Side Story, My Fair Lady, Sound of Music and more (click here to see her full repertoire). And she’s even bringing some back-up dancers from ABT to perform some original Jerome Robbins choreography to accompany her.
And we’ve got two tickets to give away.
So how do you win?
I really do think Audra can do anything. Like anything.
What role what you like to see her do? Go ahead cast her in something. Comment the role below and you could win tickets to see her at the Bowl! For example, I think she’d be a fun “Voice of the Plant” from Little Shop.
Got your assignment? Good. Go.
And good luck!

The Witch in “Into the Woods”
Olivia Pope in Scandal the Musical!
Cinderella in Cinderella!
I would love to see her in a revival of Wildcat!
Fraulein Sally Bowles in Cabaret! Let it be so!
Aldonza-Man of LaMancha
She really can do anything, so I would love to see her take on some iconic male roles like The Phantom in “Phantom Of The Opera” or Don Quixote in “Man Of La Mancha” or Tevye in “Fiddler On The Roof” – because, haven’t all the revivals been worn thin as they are? Let’s have Audra’s sheer unbridled talent redefine those roles beyond the gender binary. If anyone can, she’s the one!
“Maxine Bialystock” in a nontraditional female role-switch production of “The Producers”
Audra should play Blanche in STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE………in a traditional production or a newly conceived musical version.
since she can do anything from plays to musicals, from comedy to drama, I’d like to see her work hard. Attach her to Laura Benanti, and have them do the London mounting of Side Show. There’s lots of comedy, and they both can find the humor in pathos, and the two of them hitting those two big numbers would be theater history.
Easy one. Mama Rose in Gypsy!
Desiree in A Little Night Music!
i would love to see Audra as the Rosabella in THE MOST HAPPY FELLA….my favorite score for a musical.
I would love to see Audra as Evita!
Lena Horne in “The Lena Horne Story”
Together with Kristin Chenoweth…
“Thelma and Louise: The Musical” or “2 Girls a T-Bird, & Trouble!”
Mame in MAME!!!
Audra as Lady of the Lake in “Spamalot”. It’s fun, something silly which we rarely get to see her do, and let’s face it, she would kill it!
Victor / Victoria the opportunity for her to play a man
love to see her in Mama Mia…
Fanny Brice in “Funny Girl.” OK, it may not be ideal casting, but she would leave no doubt that “in all of the world so far, she’s the greatest star.”
Gender-bending but I want to see her sing Hedwig 🙂
I would LOVE to see AM in Victor/Victoria!
I would love to see her follow in the footsteps of Angela Lansbury’s career. She needs to be Mame in a revival of Mame (you should produce that), Mrs. Lovett in Sweeney Todd, and Mama Rose in Gypsy! Tony number 7, 8, and 9!
I would definitely love to see her show off her culinary…and other skills as Mrs. Lovett in Sweeney Todd. Maybe get her husband to play Todd himself?
Yes!!! I love this one!!
Aaron Burr in HAMILTON.
To stretch her talent Audra needs to play the role originally play a villain!
Maybe the mother in THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE .
Anita in West Side Story!
Barnum as Barnum! Let’s face it, there’s nothing she can’t do so we might as well throw in some juggling and tightrope walking!
She can do ANYTHING… including a revival of “A Chorus Line”…. a one woman show 😉
Cathy in The Last Five Years!
Nellie in South Pacific! This is how it feels, living on a hillside.,,
Norma Desmond, please!
You could cast Audra as anything: a convincing Guenevere in CAMELOT, belieable as the love interest of Arthur and Lancelot; let her reveal the loneliness inside Marian Paroo of THE MUSIC MAN; land barbs as a wicked Vera in PAL JOEY.
But if we’re fantasizing, I want a revisal–because the original libretto creaks–of Schwartz and Dietz’ 1961 flop, THE GAY LIFE. Only use a notion the original had, but didn’t use: have Audra play all of Anatole’s lovers, not just Liesl, the one he truly belongs with.
I’d love hearing her sing “Magic Moment” and “Label on the Bottle”!
Amanda Wingfield in The Glass Menagerie.
With all the new casting announcements coming out for THE WIZ, it got me thinking… Why not have Audra try her hand at it? And I’m not talking about just the title role. I’m talking all of them. Have the AVENUE Q puppet team extraordinaire be her physical co-stars, but Audra does all the characters’ voices. Audra is “Evilene”, Audra is “The Tin Man”, Audra is “The Wiz”. She’ll need some pit singers and possibly someone else for Dorothy (to give her some vocal rest) but if Ms McDonald is game, she can do it all… in the round!
Seriously though, whoever suggested Audra as “Lady of the Lake”- That’s a winner!!!
Man of La Mancha – the musical that changed my life – I would love to see it again with her in it
Lola in Damn Yankees or Saraghina in Nine
I would love to see Audra as Momma Rose in an All African American Version of Gypsy!
The Sound of Music- I think she would be great
As others have noted, she can pretty much play anything. But I’d love to see her as the Baker’s Wife in Into the Woods!
The Color Purple- I would love to see her in that show
Amalia from She Love Me! A perfect role from her and I love listening to her sing “Will He Like Me” from one of her concerts on YouTube
Sybil in Noel Coward’s “Private Lives.” On hiatus from all the earth motherin’, powerhouse, force-of-nature roles, let her be slinky, sassy, and seductive.
