Podcast Episode 71 – John Doyle

While typing the title of this blog, I wanted to call John Doyle, “Sir John Doyle.” I don’t know why.  Maybe it’s the accent.  Or maybe it’s because his productions are worthy of knighthood.

John rode his steed onto Broadway in 2005 with his Actors-playing-instruments production of Sweeney Todd and has been revitalizing revivals (including this season’s The Color Purple) and new musicals (like last year’s The Visit) ever since.

And this year he found a home when he was named the Artistic Director of Classic Stage Company, so we can all expect a lot more Doyle in our future.  And that’s a good thing.

Listen to John talk about his new gig, as well as . . .

  • How he “stumbled” into directing.
  • Where the idea for Actors playing instruments in Sweeney Todd came from.
  • The biggest difference between directing in New York and directing in London.
  • Which Actors drive him crazy, and why that’s a good thing (and yes, he names names!).
  • The one piece of advice he would give to every Broadway Producer in the business.

Enjoy this master class in directing from a man who has slayed dramaturgical dragons on both sides of the pond!
