Podcast Episode 118 – Tony Award Winning Broadway Producer & General Manager, Nancy Gibbs

First of all, welcome back to weekly Podcasts!

A few months ago, we went to monthly episodes, and, well, you didn’t like that so much.  I got a ton of emails asking me for more interviews, more often.

And, well, since I missed it too, we’re back to weekly!

We’re also debuting a brand new microphone this week in the hopes of improving our sound.  We’re still tweaking (cuz that’s what life, art and business are all about), but I promise things will improve (because that’s what successful life, art and business is all about).

And now . . . on to this week’s Tony Award-winning guest.

I wanted Nancy Nagel Gibbs on the podcast because she has dedicated over 30 years to our business in primarily two capacities . . . General Manager and Producer.  Her path was very similar to mine . . . Actor to Company Manager to General Manager to name-above-a-title Broadway Producer.

She’s applied the immense management knowledge she has learned over the years to shows like Wicked, War Paint, Bring It On, Next to Normal, Spelling Bee and many others.  As a Producer, she has brought shows like Fun Home and Peter and The Starcatcher to Broadway and been on the teams of this season’s Come From Away as well as If/Then and more.

You know what else I love.  She loves and is committed to Off Broadway (Throwback Monday – watch baby Me and Nancy in 2006 talk Off Broadway in this American Theater Wing video here.).

Off Broadway and its current state is just one of the things Nancy enlightened me about, along with . . .

  • How one phone call started her career in New York.
  • The secret to increasing a show’s subsidiary value.
  • Why she won’t commission a show.
  • Who the most important person is when developing a show from scratch.
  • The challenges of adapting something from Hollywood for Broadway.

Our business is stronger thanks to people like Nancy watching our budgets.  If you know what’s good for your show, listen in . . . and heed her advice.

Enjoy this episode! And don’t forget to subscribe . . . another Broadway Pro next week.

Sorry about the sound issues in this podcast. We found the bug and fixed it in later episodes. It gets better, I promise 🙂
