Broadway Grosses w/e 11/26/2017: Give Thanks for Thanksgiving.

According to last week’s grosses, there were very few turkeys on Broadway this Thanksgiving.

In fact, there’s probably a direct correlation between the amount of traffic on I-95 and Broadway box offices.

This week, it was bumper to bumper, as six shows did over $2mm at the box office, with that founding father of a musical doing just shy of $3.5mm.

$3.5mm!  In a week!

It wasn’t too long ago when that was a good gross for a month!  A month!

What spurs this kind of business?  Well, it used to be that Producers only did 9 shows a week during Christmas/New Year’s . . . but now, a relatively new union rule allows shows to add a 9th show to their line-up at other times of the year, including Thanksgiving, as long as they pay the premiums for it (which prove worth it for many shows).

The other reason why grosses are high?

As I said in an interview with the New York Times today, I think we’re witnessing the results of Producers and Ad Agencies investing in staffing, technology, and other resources to take advantage of pricing changes, rather than just going off their gut.

The data is out there.  And we’re using it.

That’s why so far this year, we’re up over 17% from last year.  And we haven’t even gotten to the Spring season of new shows yet!

And if you think this Thanksgiving was good, just wait until you see what Santa is gonna bring us.
